Smidgeons are inveterate opportunists. Driven by powerful wanderlust, these nomadic halflings travel across Amar in search of adventure.
Optimistic, cheerful, and blessed with uncanny luck, smidgeons make up for their short stature with an abundance of bravado and curiosity. Their ability to find humor in the absurd, no matter how dire the situation, often allows smidgeons to distance themselves slightly from the dangers that surround them.
Smidgeons firmly believe they can turn any situation to their advantage, sometimes gleefully leaping into danger. Often unable to physically defend themselves from the rigors of the world, they know when to bend with the wind and when to hide away. smidgeons’ curiosity often overwhelms their good sense, leading to poor decisions and narrow escapes. While harsh experience sometimes teaches smidgeons a measure of caution, it rarely makes them completely lose faith in their luck.
Smidgeons have a flair for the dramatic and affinity for self-indulgence. They typically decorate their wagons lavishly and carry a few cherished keepsakes to adorn their campsites.
smidgeons rise to a humble height of 3 feet. They prefer to walk barefoot, leading the bottoms of their feet to become roughly calloused. Tufts of thick, curly hair warm the tops of their broad, tanned feet. Their skin tends toward a rich cinnamon color and their hair toward light shades of brown. A smidgeon’s ears are pointed, but proportionately not much larger than those of a human. Many smidgeons make their livings by drawing attention, dressing in the flashiest fashions.
Rather than place their faith in empires or great causes, smidgeons prefer to live in the moment. They claim no cultural homeland and control no permanent settlements. They have an extensive oral history filled with important stories about folk heroes who exemplify particular smidgeon virtues, but otherwise see little purpose in studying history in and of itself. Given a choice between a pointless truth and a useful fable, smidgeons almost always opt for the fable. This tendency helps to explain at least something of the famous smidgeon adaptability. smidgeons look to the future and find it very easy to cast off the weight of ancient grudges or obligations that drag down so many other races.
Perhaps because of the prejudice they face when visiting human cities, smidgeons value the relationship between guests and their hosts. Smidgeon caravans compete at giving gifts and outdoing one another’s hospitality. Some members of other races know that refusing a smidgeon’s offer of hospitality guarantees a more generous offer to follow.
Morality and Religion
Though without a formal religion, smidgeons are loyal to their friends and families, but since they dwell in a world dominated by races twice as large as themselves, they have come to grips with the fact that sometimes they need to scrape and scrounge for survival. smidgeons place a great emphasis on the innate common sense of the individual. When a smidgeon disagrees with society at large, he will do what he thinks is best. Always practical, smidgeons frequently feign to worship the deity most favored by their host city. Truly devout smidgeons often worship Fortuna, the goddess of luck and travel.
Smidgeons consider dwarves dour and humorless. They disagree about concepts of property, especially concerning land. As a result, smidgeons avoid The Red Road when possible, avoiding the toll on principal. A few dramatic Smidgeon troupes have partnered with Dwarven mummers to put on tragedies of legendary acclaim, but for the most part the two races are happy to ignore each other.
Hobbits and Gnomes
Smidgeons think fondly of their halfling kin. While caravans stop at human cities for profit, visits to hobbit towns or Gnome tribes are highly anticipated events. Other halflings typically welcome the caravan with a large party, which the Smidgeons try to outdo on their final night in town. The caravan brings wonders from across Amar to trade for their favorite supplies. Smidgeon entertainers often improvise and try out their new routines while performing for other halflings.
Smidgeon opinion on humankind ranges from fascination to malevolence. Some smigdeons see humans as foolish brutes who exist to be conned, while others appreciate their ingenuity and sense of humor. Traveling humans are typically welcome to join Smidgeon caravans if they can pay or pull their weight. Many humans enjoy Smidgeon entertainment and look forward to their visits. Not every human realm welcomes the halflings, as some mistrustful humans see smidgeons as worthless thieves.
Most Smidgeons go in fear of monstrous races, avoiding The Wild Lands utterly and taking steps to secure their caravans. When their travels bring them together, smigeons use cunning, ingenuity, and magic to avoid direct confrontation. Smidgeon adventurers sometimes relish fighting these more fearsome races and toy with their enemies in showy displays of skill.
Their inherent luck coupled with their insatiable wanderlust makes smidgeons ideal candidates for lives of adventure. Though perfectly willing to pocket any valuables they come across, smidgeons often care more for the new experiences adventuring brings them than for any material reward. smidgeons tend to view money as a means of making their lives easier and more comfortable, not as an end in and of itself. Other such vagabonds often put up with this curious race in hopes that some of their mystical luck will rub off. smidgeons see nothing wrong with encouraging this belief, not just in their traveling companions, but also in the larger world. Many try to use their reputation for luck haggle down their deal partners. They meet with mixed success, but there are just enough stories circulating about the good fortune that befalls people traveling with smidgeons to give even the most skeptical pause.
